About Janet Wong
Professor Janet Wong Yuen-ha is Dean and Professor of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences at Hong Kong Metropolitan University. She obtained her professional qualifications and Doctor of Philosophy from The University of Hong Kong (HKU). During her doctoral studies, she was awarded the Fulbright Visiting Scholarship (2010–2011), through which she undertook training at the University of Virginia in the United States. Professor Wong has since developed her academic career at her alma mater. During her tenure at HKU, she steered the modernization of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and led major curriculum reform initiatives as Chair of Teaching and Learning. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN), the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FFNMRCSI), the Australasian College of Health Service Management (FCHSM), the Hong Kong College of Nursing and Health Care Management, and the Hong Kong College of Health Service Executives (FHKCHSE).
An accomplished scholar, Professor Wong has secured numerous competitive research grants and published over 200 articles in international peer-reviewed journals. She was named among the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists in her specialty areas by Stanford University (2023–2025). Her principal research focuses on health inequalities and vulnerable populations, including intimate partner violence, risky sexual behaviours, and ethnic and sexual minorities. Her research enhanced her capacity to know-how, fostered problem-solving skills, and disseminated nurse-driven innovations and evidence-informed practice to promote health.
Professor Wong is also deeply committed to educational innovation and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Her initiatives include high-fidelity simulation, gamification, interprofessional education, and virtual reality-based learning in healthcare education. She received the Teaching Innovation (Team) Award at HKU in both 2020 and 2021, recognizing her sustained excellence in teaching. In 2023, she collaborated with two partner institutions and was awarded a government grant of approximately HK$8 million (EUR €890K) to develop the first cross-institutional VR game to enhance healthcare students’ interprofessional communication skills.
In addition, Professor Wong is actively engaged in community and professional service. She serves as a Council or Board Member of several local professional organizations/NGOs, including the Hospital Authority, the Nursing Council of Hong Kong, the Allied Health Professions Council, Harmony House, and the Hong Kong Single Parents Association. She was elected as Asia Regional Coordinator of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing in 2019 and re-elected in 2021.
