About the session

The global healthcare landscape has changed dramatically in recent years, underscoring the critical role of nurses as the backbone of healthcare systems and highlighting the need for stronger professional recognition and cross-border standards.
In response, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and its partners in the European University Hospital Alliance launched the Erasmus+ funded EUCARE project in 2023. EUCARE equips critical care nurses across Europe with specialized training in disaster preparedness while fostering a pan-European professional network that strengthens nursing as an independent and recognized profession.

Running through 2026, EUCARE will establish Europe’s first fellowship program dedicated to disaster preparedness for critical care nurses. Early findings reinforce the importance of nursing standards: clearly defined standards are essential for safe, effective, and high-quality care, providing nurses with the authority and framework to make timely, patient-centered decisions.

Building on these insights, Charité and its partners across the European Union and beyond are committed to developing and implementing European Nursing Standards. Supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Council of Nurses (ICN), these standards aim to create a unified professional framework, strengthen patient safety, elevate nursing as an autonomous profession, and ensure consistent, high-quality care in both routine and crisis settings.

This approach reflects successful models in countries such as the United States, Canada, and Australia, where harmonized nursing standards empower nurses and support consistent care delivery. By adopting shared standards across Europe, the EU can achieve greater professional cohesion, enhance recognition of nursing expertise, and build a continent-wide network of empowered nurses advocating for their patients and strengthening healthcare resilience.
