About Fionnuala Murphy
Fionnuala Murphy is Associate Director of Advocacy at Frontline AIDS, a global partnership of civil society and community organisations working to end AIDS.
Fionnuala grew up in the north of Ireland where her experience of conflict shaped a lifelong commitment to human rights. After graduating in law, she began her career working on the right to health with a focus on equitable access to HIV treatment. From 2003, she was part of global efforts that helped catalyse a G8 commitment on AIDS treatment for all, the creation of Unitaid and stronger use of TRIPS flexibilities which allow countries to circumvent intellectual property restrictions in order to protect public health. For more than 20 years, Fionnuala has contributed her expertise and her energy to policy, research and advocacy work across HIV, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and health justice. Since 2019 she has led Frontline AIDS’ global advocacy team, which works with partners around the world to build strong civil society movements and bring the voices of people living with and affected by HIV, and the community organisations responding to AIDS, into national and global decision-making.
In 2024, Fionnuala was also appointed to the NGO delegation of the UNAIDS Programme Board. There, she has led delegation advocacy to strengthen global commitment to sustainable community-led responses to HIV and counter rollback on human rights, gender justice and the goal of ending AIDS by 2030. This year, she was nominated co-facilitator of a UN working group on the future transition and integration of UNAIDS. In this role, she has helped shape transformative change within the UN joint programme, while safeguarding global leadership on AIDS and strengthening the meaningful engagement of people living with HIV, communities and civil society within global AIDS governance and beyond.
