A Vision for Hospitals of the Future as Global Networks
How can Everyone Benefit from Transnational Data Hubs, Smart Living Drugs, and Personalized Treatment?

About the session
The workshop will explore the development of a transnational “medicine of the future,” as promoted by the Leibniz Association’s Health & Prevention Network (LHP) and other partners. It will examine how AI-supported data integration, precision medicine, and future hospital networks can contribute to improved prevention, diagnosis, and treatment across both the Global North and the Global South.
A key focus will be the use of large, transnational, longitudinal health datasets to support real-time, individualized health predictions and treatment recommendations. By integrating data from diverse patient populations, these approaches may help reduce diagnostic and treatment biases resulting from the historical dominance of Western health systems, particularly for ethnic and cultural minorities.
The concept includes interconnected “hospitals of the future,” where data collection, pseudonymization, and transmission are standardized, alongside AI-based data centers that use federated learning to analyze large-scale health data. The workshop will also address the potential of “smart living drugs,” including cell and gene therapies, to transform the treatment of diseases such as cancer and severe autoimmune conditions.
At the same time, the session will critically examine questions of feasibility, governance, and equitable access. It will address challenges related to data sovereignty, affordability, infrastructure, and sustainable implementation, particularly in low- and middle-income countries and resource-constrained settings.
The workshop will bring together academic perspectives on AI-based data integration, analysis, and treatment, as well as perspectives from the Global South on priorities and needs, industry views on feasibility and implementation, and policy discussions on the frameworks required to support equitable and sustainable innovation.
