Dr. Sharon Yvette Angelina Villanueva

Dr. Sharon Yvette Angelina M. Villanueva is currently a Professor of Medical Microbiology and Associate Dean for Research of the College of Public Health, University of the Philippines Manila (UP CPH). She finished her B.S. Public Health degree from the same College and obtained her Master of Medical Sciences and Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Sciences (Pathological Sciences) from the Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Kyushu University, Japan. Dr. Villanueva was also a Post-doctoral fellow of JST-JICA in partnership with Kyushu University and Chiba Institute of Science. Dr. Villanueva has numerous international publications with focus on leptospirosis seroprevalence, pathogenesis, serologic and molecular diagnosis, kit development, and vaccine production. She also has publications on other infectious diseases. Her other research interests are on One Health and antimicrobial resistance. She is currently the program leader of DOST-funded research programs: Decreasing Leptospirosis Emergence through Prognosis and Treatment Optimization (DeLEPTO) and One Health Approach in the Characterization of Bacterial Antimicrobial Resistance in the Greater Manila Area (One ARM), wherein she also is the project leader in each of these programs. She is also the country project leader of the International Development Research Centre-funded Designing One Health Governance for Antimicrobial Stewardship Interventions (DESIGN) project, which is an international research collaboration of Canada, Philippines, Senegal, Hungary, and Netherlands. She is a member of various national and international organizations and is a Registered Microbiologist and a Diplomate of the Philippine Academy of Microbiology. She is also a technical/peer reviewer of manuscripts submitted in national and international journals, project proposals submitted for funding by national and international funding agencies, and research projects for ethics review.
