About Mahbubur Rahman
Dr Mahbubur Rahman, is a senior epidemiologist, public health physician and One Health expert from Bangladesh with more than 25 years of experience in public health, infectious disease surveillance, outbreak investigation and response, pandemic preparedness and health security. He currently serves as Associate Professor of Community Medicine at the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) and the National Influenza Centre, Bangladesh. He holds a PhD in Epidemiology from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) under University of London, and an MPH in Epidemiology from Bangladesh.
Dr Rahman has extensive expertise in One Health policy and strategy development, zoonotic disease surveillance and risk assessment, multisectoral outbreak response, pandemic preparedness, climate-resilient health systems and the science–policy interface. He is currently working as the General Secretary of the ‘One Health Bangladesh’, a multidisciplinary civil society for One Health.
He has contributed to the development of Bangladesh’s One Health Strategic Framework and pandemic preparedness plans and integrated surveillance systems. His research has addressed zoonotic diseases, environmental surveillance, influenza, emerging respiratory viruses and disease transmission at human–animal interfaces.
He has more than a decade of experience supporting national and international public health programmes, and a leadership roles at IEDCR. He has coordinated all three tiers of Bangladesh’s Field Epidemiology Training Programs and contributed substantially to workforce development and multisectoral capacity building. He served as the Member Secretary of the National Implementation Committee for Bangladesh’s 2024 IHR Joint External Evaluation. He is a member of the WHO Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Partnership Contribution Independent Technical Expert Mechanism (PCITEM), the WHO expert group on GISRS Unity Studies and Investigations, and other global technical working groups. He contributes to global guidance, research and evidence-informed policy for strengthening One Health and health security.
