Dr Ali Jafarian born in 1968 in Tehran-Iran, entered Medical school of Tehran University of Medical
Sciences (TUMS) in 1985. He did his residency of General Surgery in Imam Khomeini Hospital
Complex-TUMS from 1994 to 1998. He started his job as faculty member of TUMS in department of
General Surgery from 1999 after one year of service in a peripheral province.
Ali Jafarian was awarded the certificate of Vascular Surgery in 2006 and focused on
Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery and Liver Transplantation from that time afterwards. He passed
several short courses on Medical Education in TUMS and University of Dundee and did his sabbatical
leave on Liver Transplantation and Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery in Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic,
USA, in 2011. He is the Founding director of the Liver Transplantation program since 2002 and the
head of the division of hepatopancreatobiliary and Liver Transplantation in Imam Khomeini Hospital
Complex, TUMS, since 2008.
Dr Jafarian worked with Iranian Graduate Medical Council from 2006 to 2017 as a member or
associate. He is also appointed as a member of national board of General Surgery since 2015. He is
associate member of Iranian Academy of Medical Sciences from 2013.
From administrative viewpoint, he was Dean of Medical School in 2008-2009 and Vice Chancellor in
2009-2011. Dr Ali Jafarian was appointed as the Chancellor of Tehran University of Medical Sciences in
September 2013 for a term of 4 years to September 2017; in which 13000 students, 1700 faculty
members and 15000 employees are working in 11 schools, 16 teaching hospitals with 4100 beds and 3
health care networks covering 2.8 million population of south Tehran. At the same time, he was also a member of Supreme council for Science, Research and Technology and National Council of Evaluation
of State Education. TUMS membership in M8 Alliance is one the international achievements during his
term. After finishing his term as chancellor, he is now a member of Board of Trustees of TUMS.
Ali Jafarian M.D. has contributed in more 70 published papers and 5 books mainly focused on three
themes: Hepatobiliary surgery and liver transplantation, Medical Ethics and Medical Education. He is a
member International Liver Transplant Society (ILTS), Middle East Society of Organ Transplantation
(MESOT) and IRanian Society of Organ Transplantation (IRSOT).
