Associate Professor Jonathan Shaw is currently Associate Director of the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, holds a post as Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine and of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at Melbourne’s Monash University, and is a National Health and Medical Research Council Senior Research Fellow.
Shaw is Co-Chief Investigator of the AusDiab Study, the largest population-based study in Australia examining the natural history of diabetes, pre-diabetes, heart disease, and kidney disease. Associate Professor Shaw's research interests include the epidemiology of diabetes, diabetic complications and prevalence of type 2 diabetes in children.
Jonathan Shaw underwent his clinical and research training in the UK, before taking up the post of Research Director and Consultant Physician at the International Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, Australia.
He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers and 33 book chapters. His research interests include the epidemiology of diabetes, diabetic complications, the metabolic syndrome and obesity, type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents, the links between diabetes and sleep apnoea and type 2 diabetes, and the role of physical activity in the management of diabetes. He has been a member of a number of Expert Committees constituted by the World Health Organization, The American Diabetes Association, and the International Diabetes Federation. In 2006, he was awarded the global Novartis Diabetes Award (for research).
