Dr Carina Ferreira-Borges, is a public health specialist with an interest in non-communicable diseases and holds a PhD in International Health. She started at WHO in 2006 at the WHO Regional Office for Africa, based in Brazzaville, Congo where she worked in the areas of substance abuse and mental health. In 2017, Carina joined the NCD Office as Programme Manager for Alcohol, Illicit Drugs and Prison Health dedicating her work to strengthening WHO normative and technical support to countries namely the development of comprehensive national policies aimed at reducing alcohol consumption and the improvement of prison health systems. In addition to being in charge of these areas, Carina is currently the acting Head of the WHO European Office for Prevention and Control of NCDs (NCD Office). In this position she is providing strategic and technical support to the fifty-three Member States of the Region in scaling up their efforts to better prevent and control noncommunicable diseases (NCD). She is also responsible for coordinating WHO support to the NCD Council, an initiative driven by WHO Regional Director to accelerate progress and innovation for tackling NCDs.
