Jan Coles

Professor Jan Coles is an academic General Practitioner with a vision to incorporate violence education into the curriculum of all medical students and primary healthcare practitioners. She is a member of the World Health Organization Expert panel on violence against women curriculum (2015, 2017) tasked with the design of international core curriculum for the WHO. She was awarded the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence and the Dean’s Award for Innovation in Teaching for her violence education work in 2015. She was the lead investigator for a Learning and Teaching grant, funded by the Office for Learning and Teaching, which developed an online teaching resource for family violence www.pactproject.org Jan’s research has concentrated on the impacts of childhood sexual abuse on Australian women’s health and the education of health practitioners in the area of family violence. She has a national and international research profile in these areas. Her research students range from summer scholars to PhD students. Her recent international research includes: an international investigation of the sexual harassment of women doctors with the Medical Women International Association and the development of guidelines to prevent secondary trauma for researchers investigating sexual and partner violence with the Sexual Violence Research Initiative. Her national work includes family violence education and its evaluation, an investigation of the experiences of different community groups disclosing partner violence to their health professionals and the education of health professionals to improve their responses to these communities. She currently is deputy co-chair for the scientific committee of the Medical Women International Association and a member of the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) special interest group on family violence and the women’s working group for women in family medicine.
