Given Katuta Mwelwa is a Politician and the Member of Parliament for Chienge Constituency in Luapula Province of the Republic of Zambia. Chienge is a Rural
Constituency with numerous challenges. She is the only Member of Parliament under Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) after beating the ruling party in their stronghold.
Before going into politics she served as Founder and CEO of Shimweo Investments Limited a private business broking company with operations in Zambia and the SADC region. She serves as a Director and Board Member of Shimweo Institute and Tselach Education Agency. Ms. Katuta Mwelwa is the first female parliamentarian for Chienge since Zambia got independence in 1964.
During her Parliamentary work she has served on various high level committees such as the Committee on Cabinet Affairs, the Committee on Transport and Communication, Executive Committee Member of Caucus on Children’s Rights, Zambia Women Parliamentary Caucus, Zambia – China Friendship Association, and Commonwealth Parliamentarians with Disabilities.
Ms. Katuta Mwelwa is currently serving on the Select Committee appointed by the Honourable Mr. Speaker to receive submissions on Zambia National Assembly Amendment bill No 10 of 2019 to scrutinize 2016 constitution and submit to Parliament.
Ms. Katuta Mwelwa served as Executive Member of the prestigious Standing
Committee on Peace International and Security of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and recently appointed by the President of Inter-Parliamentary Union to serve on the IPU Advisory Group on Health following her immerse contribution while serving on the Standing Committee.
Hon. Katuta has set for herself a mission to change the plight of young girls and women in her country. She is fighting against sexual abuse, other forms of violence against women and girls, child marriage and gender discrimination.
As a defender of human rights and a voice of the voiceless she has scored success in her efforts to educate her natives by sponsoring over 134 young people in various primary, secondary and tertiary institutions. Youth Empowerment Project were she provided motor-bikes to young people and she continues to support youth and women groups in Chienge Constituency.
Ms. Katuta Mwelwa holds qualifications in sales and marketing, purchasing and
supply, distributive management and ITL v3 foundation. Recognising her contribution to her country the London Graduate School of the Commonwealth University awarded her an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Public Administration.
