About Emmanuel Tanui

Dr. Emmanuel Tanui is a specialist pharmacist and Kenya's National Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Focal Point working at the Kenya National Public Health Institute (KNPHI), where he leads the country's coordinated response to one of the most pressing global health threats of our time. With over a decade of experience strengthening public health systems through a One Health lens, he works at the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health, championing the integrated, cross-sectoral action that effective AMR containment demands. In his national role, Dr. Tanui spearheads the development and implementation of comprehensive strategies to combat AMR, convening One Health stakeholders to ensure a unified national response. He led the successful development, launch, and implementation of Kenya's AMR National Action Plan 2023–2027, a landmark framework guiding the country's surveillance, stewardship, and containment efforts. Dr. Tanui holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy and a Master of Medicine in Chinese Materia Medica, and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Public Health. He is a registered member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya. His work reflects a deep commitment to translating policy into practice and safeguarding the effectiveness of antimicrobials for future generations. He brings a frontline national perspective on operationalising One Health approaches to AMR in low- and middle-income settings, and on the partnerships needed to turn global commitments into country-level impact.
