Prof. Kawasaki is currently leading an ophthalmic epidemiology research team at the Department of Public Health of Yamagata University in Japan. He received his MD (1997) and PhD (2008) from Yamagata University, Japan, and MPH from Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, USA (2007).
Prof. Kawasaki is a retinal specialist committed to clinical practice in macular and retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and retinal vein occlusion with a strong interest in bringing epidemiological findings into clinical practice. He has been involved in the development and application of retinal imaging in both clinical setting and screening to predict ocular diseases and systemic diseases. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers in international journals, including Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, British Journal of Ophthalmology, as well as Hypertension, Stroke, and Diabetes Care. Prof. Kawasaki is an editorial board member of Ophthalmic Epidemiology.
Prof. Kawasaki has been recognized internationally and nationally with numerous awards, including the Alcon Japan Clinical Research Award (2006), the Yamagata University Academic Achievement Award (2008), the Australian Prime Minister's Education Assistance Program for Japan (2012), and the 6th Fukuda Award, Japanese Society of Ophthalmic Diabetology (2013).
