Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare is currently the Presidential Advisor on Health. He was until December, 2019 the Director General of the Ghana Health Service and a former Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). He is a Medical Doctor, Consultant General Surgeon, mentor, leader and a reformer. Dr Nsiah-Asare begun his medical education at the University of Ghana Medical School where he was admitted in 1974 and successfully completed 1980. Between 1989 and 1993, he left the country to Germany to undertake his postgraduate studies in General Surgery. In 1997 and 1998 he obtained Certificates in Management Methods in International Health and Health Management from Boston University, School of Public Health, Boston and GIMPA respectively.
Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare has spent over 40 years of his working life in the health sector both locally and internationally. He can also boast of 30 years in management and leadership positions in the health care industry. Countries with which Dr Nsiah-Asare has rich work experience in the healthcare sector include Ghana (1980 to 1982; 1986 to 1989; 1993 to date), Germany (1990 to 1993) and, Nigeria (1982 to 1986). He has passed through the entire leadership of the health sector; as a Medical Superintendent of a District Hospital at Offinso, Medical Superintendent of a Regional Hospital at Tamale, Chief Executive Officer of a Teaching Hospital, KATH and the immediate past Director-General of the Ghana Health Service.
He will be remembered for his dedication and professional role during his tenure of office as the Chief Executive Officer of KATH in Kumasi where he worked for about 8 years. He led the transformation of KATH and facilitated the Infrastructure development of the Hospital. He was responsible for driving the vision of the 1,000-bed hospital and day-to-day management as head of the Hospital Management Team. He transformed the Hospital into a Centre of Excellence in the West African sub-region with several achievements, notable amongst them was the establishment of the first ultra-modern state-of-the-art Accident & Emergency Centre with a helipad in West Africa.
He is a Fellow West African College of Surgeons (FWACS), Fellow Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (FGCPS), Fach Arzt Fuer Chirurgie (FA.Chirg) and Fellow International College of Surgeons (FICS).
Dr Nsiah-Asare has been a Member of a number of national and international professional organizations. Dr Nsiah-Asare was a Member of the Ghana Health Service Council, National Health Insurance Board, Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons Council and the Board of the Ghana AIDs Commission. He has been a Member of the governing Council of the Garden City University College, Kumasi for over12 years.
Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare has published several scientific papers and books.
He is currently a Member of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.
