Prof. Dr. Shing Chuan Hooi is a respected educator in the Department of Physiology at the National University of Singapore Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUS Medicine). He graduated with MB;BS degrees from the National University of Singapore in 1983 and obtained his PhD from Harvard University in 1992. His leadership capabilities are evident in his many senior management level appointments. He was Head of the Department of Physiology from 2000 to 2008, Assistant Dean (Pre-clinical) of the Education Team from 2009 to 2010 and Vice-Dean (Education) of NUS Medicine since 2010.
He has helped many cohorts of medical students bridge the gap between theory and practice. Through case studies, Prof. Hooi illustrates how pre-clinical science is a critical underpinning that is relevant to clinical practice. He makes concepts come to life through hands-on experiential learning. For example, the innovative and well-received Harvey high-fidelity simulator case-based teaching programme was initiated, developed and implemented by Prof Hooi. In this programme, students are given the invaluable opportunity to hone their clinical skills effectively and to develop confidence and expertise in a safe and conducive environment.
For his unwavering commitment and dedication to nurturing future generations of medical students, Prof. Hooi was conferred the NUS Outstanding Educator Award in 2012. He has also been lauded with numerous teaching awards, including the Annual Excellent Teacher Award and NUS Excellent Teacher Award.
