Dr. Canice Nolan is a toxicologist with a PhD from University College Dublin, Ireland. He joined the European Commission in 1991 in the Environment Programme of DG RDT managing research on environmental risks and on chemical safety. In 1997, he became a regulator, moving to Head the Pesticides Sector in DG AGRI just before it was transferred to the newly-treated DG Health and Consumers (SANCO). Here, he headed the Pesticides Sector until he was posted to the EU Delegation in Washington in 2004. On his return to SANCO in 2008, he became Team Leader for international activities in the Public Health Directorate working mainly on relations with the WHO and on global health. He is currently Deputy Head of Unit dealing with health strategy and international relations. Previously, he had worked at the EU Joint research Centre in Italy, the University of Rhode Island in the USA, and the International Atomic Energy Agency doing research over a 12-year period on occupational and environmental exposure to radiation and chemicals.
