Born in 1958 in Troisdorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, married with 2 children.
Graduate of Bonn University with degrees in geography and history.
European Commission scholarship from DG XII, Science and Research under the research programme on energy systems analysis for the preparation of the thesis: “Economic decision-making model for the location of waste incineration plants in Europe”. Ph.D. from the University of Bonn in Germany and the University of Leuven in Belgium.
During this period contributions to drafting directives on the incineration of municipal and hazardous waste, the treatment of cadmium and mercury in batteries and the treatment of used oil for DG XI, Environment, Consumer Protection and Nuclear Safety. On behalf of the Commission work on issues of clean technologies, particularly in international waste management, in cooperation with the OECD and UNEP.
Joined the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) in 1987. Deputy head of division for international waste management until 1990. German representative in the elaboration process of the Basel Convention on the Control of the Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal.
From 1991 to 1996 head of division “Military and armament contaminated sites” at the BMU in Berlin. Responsible for the identification of sites suspected of contamination in areas used by the military before the withdrawal of Soviet troops.
From 1996 to 2003 head of division “International protection of the marine environment”.
Participation in the Intermediate Ministerial Meeting on the Integration of Fisheries and Environmental Issues (IMM 97) and the Fifth international Conference on the Protection of the North Sea (Bergen 2002).
In 2003 transfer to the BMU’s environment and health directorate. Since 2007 head of division “Health impacts of climate change and adaptation”. Close cooperation with WHO EURO, implementation of joint seven-country initiative to protect health from climate change.
Responsible for preparing the relevant climate change topic addressed at the 5th WHO Conference on Environment and Health in Parma 2010. International symposium on “Climate Change, Extreme Weather Events and Public Health” on 29 and 30 November 2010. Co-chair of the WHO HIC Working Group.
