Sindura Ganapathi works as a Deputy Director on the Global Health Division’s Maternal, Neonatal and Child health (MNCH Discovery and Tools) team. His work includes setting and executing research agenda around maternal, neonatal and child health to improve conditions which together account for ~70% of the under 5 mortality and significant morbidity.
Sindura joined the foundation in 2012. Before becoming Deputy Director, Sindura served as Chief of Staff to the President in Global Health. In this capacity, he served as a thought partner to the President to help run the Global Health division. Before that, he worked as a program officer in maternal and child health.
He is also interested in ‘One Health’ topic that brings together animal and human health sectors for innovations. As part of this, he coordinated the integration of foundation’s human health and animal health strategies, including the launching foundation’s first ‘Grand Challenges Exploration’ topic in this area to source innovations.
Before joining the Gates foundation, Sindura worked in the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIH/NIEHS) where his research focused on ion channel physiology and inositol phosphate biology.
Sindura grew up in a rural household near the coast of South India. His educational background includes degree in veterinary medicine from Bangalore Veterinary School, masters in veterinary pharmacology from Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), followed by further advanced degrees in Penn State University (PhD in Pharmacology and MBA).
