About Michaela Lackner

Univ. Prof. Priv.-Doz. Mag. Dr. rer. nat. Michaela Lackner is a globally recognized expert in Medical Mycology and a passionate advocate for the One Health approach. As a University Professor for Experimental Mycology and Deputy Director of the Institute of Hygiene and Medical Microbiology at the Medical University of Innsbruck, she leads groundbreaking research on fungal pathogens, antifungal resistance, innovative diagnostic and novel therapeutic strategies. Her work bridges basic science, translational research, and clinical applications, aligning with the One Health mission to address health challenges at the human-animal-environment interface. Prof. Lackner has authored over 120 peer-reviewed publications, including global treatment and diagnostic guidelines, and is a Fellow of the European Confederation of Medical Mycology (www.ecmm.info). She also coordinates the MYCOS PhD training program (mui-mycos.at), which trains future scientists in antimicrobial resistance and One Health principles. A key focus of her research is the dual usage of azoles in agriculture and medicine, a major driver of antifungal resistance. She is committed to developing mitigation strategies that unite stakeholders—scientists, policymakers, healthcare professionals, and agricultural experts—to ensure sustainable solutions for human, animal, and environmental health. In addition to her scientific achievements, Prof. Lackner is chairwoman of the Gender and Equity Board (AKGl) at the Medical University of Innsbruck, where she fosters inclusive policies, ensures fair hiring practices, and promotes gender equity across the institution. Her leadership underscores her commitment to creating a supportive and equitable environment for the next generation of scientists. Prof. Lackner’s dedication to advancing fungal diagnostics, therapeutics, and resistance management through a One Health lens, combined with her leadership in equity and her collaborative approach to addressing azole resistance, makes her a vital contributor to the World Health Conference and its vision of integrated, sustainable health solutions.
