The Rt Hon The Lord Boateng PC DL, a civil liberties lawyer, is a former UK Cabinet Minister and Diplomat having served as the UKs High Commissioner to South Africa. He previously held office as a Minister in the Department of Health, and as Police and Security Minister in the U.K. before entering the Cabinet as Chief Secretary to the Treasury, where he oversaw two Comprehensive Spending reviews into U.K. health spending. Brought up in Ghana, Lord Boateng was the Prime Ministers Special Representative on the Blair Africa Commission. He currently serves on the Health Advisory Board of Gilead Sciences, chairs the Nairobi based Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund – a Pan African multi-donor fund to support agricultural and renewable energy business on the continent – and is a Director of the Ghana International Bank. A frequent broadcaster and writer on Africa, he chairs, amongst a number of charities, the Planet Earth Institute (PEI), which advocates for the role of science in development.
