Born and educated in Italy, Prof. Messner studied Medicine, Sinology, History of Medicine and Anthropology in Innsbruck, Vienna, Beijing and Freiburg i. Br. She has written and published on a wide range of topics, including Chinese science and medicine, the cultural exchange between China and Europe since the 17th century. With the support of the German Science Foundation (DFG) she has initiated the Villa Vigoni Research Conferences on the ’Emotion Knowledge in the Chinese Past’.
Her current research focus is on Medical Materialities In/Between Europe and East Asia. At Kiel University, Prof. Messner heads the China Center, is a member of the Central Ethic commission (CAU), acts as the speaker of the research group ‘Societas Ethologica et Sociologica’ and of the working group ‘Participatory Research’. She frequently serves as Guest and Visiting Professor at various Universities in China. She serves as editorial board member of the Journal of the Economic and Social History of the Orient (JESHO) and of the Journal of Chinese Medicine (Shanghai). Prof. Messner is the President elect of IASTAM (International Association of the Study of Traditional Asian Medicines).
