Prof Dr Alex Burdorf is head of the Department of Public Health of the Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam. The department has about 170 staff members, of which 150 researchers with well over 100 junior-researchers / PhD-students. There are 10 research groups, amongst others, research groups on social determinants of population health, and occupational health. My own research focuses on the role of health in labour force participation, and the role of paid employment in health and health inequalities. Alex Burdorf serves as a member of the Netherlands Health Council. He is editor-in-chief of the Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment & Health. Over the past years he has co-authored about 500 scientific publications in a variety of topics, mainly occupational health and public health. For many years Burdorf was responsible for the academic collaborative center in public health, an joint organization of Erasmus MC and City of Rotterdam with the main aim to contribute to population health and reduce health inequalities in the city of Rotterdam.
