Currently, Dr Kabatereine works with “Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI) of Imperial College London but he is based in Uganda at ‘Vector Control Division’ of Ministry of Health. He works as ‘African Capacity Building Manager for SCI. He has a BSC degree (Botany Zoology), MSc (Medical Entomology) and PhD (Epidemiology). Narcis Kabatereine has accumulated more than 35 years of experience in the control of NTDs, mainly against schistosomiasis. He served for 7 years as head of the Vector Control Division and was also in charge of the Schistosomiasis Control Programme in the Ministry of Health of Uganda. Dr Kabatereine has participated in a number of WHO working groups on NTDs, schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiases in particular and in the development of a number of WHO manuals such as the guideline on integrated preventive chemotherapy, and the NTD monitoring and evaluation and integrated NTD mapping manuals.
He has published extensively on NTDs, notably on the epidemiology of schistosomiasis mansoni, and has 144 publications in peer-reviewed journals. As a temporary WHO consultant, Dr Kabatereine has assisted a large number of African countries in drawing up their plans of action to control NTDs, and in designing their approach for Integrated Vector Management.
He is currently a member of the WHO capacity-building working group on schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth infections, a member of the NTD Regional Programme Review Group for the WHO African Region, a member of the team providing technical support to the Pediatric Praziquantel Consortium and a member of Global Schistosomiasis Alliance.
