Honorable Dorcas Makgato-Malesu is currently the Minister of Health in Botswana. She served in many organizations, which are the engines of economic growth that drive the country’s development in general. Prior to being appointed Assistant Minister, she was the Chief Executive Officer of the Botswana Export and Development and Investment Authority (BEDIA). Key to her role at BEDIA was policy advocacy, where she was instrumental in identifying impediments to investment and lobbying Government to make changes for an improved investment climate, involving greater engagement and interaction with critical stakeholders and the private sector.
Prior to working for BEDIA Dorcas Makgato- Malesu worked for Barloworld. This is one of the largest Private sector holding groups in Botswana. At Barloworld Makgato-Malesu rose through the ranks from Group Executive Human Resource function to Director Corporate Services. She was responsible for the strategic positioning of the organization in the market with emphasis on Change Management to align the business strategy with the new identity of Barloworld. She was also the Executive Director overseeing Nashua Franchise and was responsible for the strategic direction and performance of the company. Before joining Barloworld she was Head of the Commercial and Human Resource Divisions of the National Airline, Air Botswana.
Hon Dorcas Makgato-Malesu held a number of positions at Debswana, a world renowned Diamond Mining company in Botswana, before going to Air Botswana. Her responsibilities included but were not limited to Management Development and Training, Catering Management and Human Resource Development.
The Hon. Minister has held various social leadership and Board membership roles in Botswana and internationally. She was Chairperson of the Botswana National Sports Council, Vice Chairperson of the Botswana College of Distance Learning (BOCODOL) and Vice Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa. She was also appointed to the African Union Ad Hoc Committee tasked with the responsibility of restructuring the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa.
She was a member of the Botswana Tripartite Task Force (ILO Swiss Project) tasked with the responsibility of aligning Botswana Labor Laws with ratified Conventions She is also a member of Labor Advisory Council. Other Board Memberships included Barclays Bank of Botswana where she chaired the Barclays Pension Fund, as well as the Barloworld Botswana Trading, Technique Botswana and Sponsor-a- Child Trust.
Hon Dorcas Makgato-Malesu interests are to meaningfully contribute to the National Development and economic growth of Botswana.
