Dr. Catarina Resende de Oliveira is Full Professor of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra, Consultant of Neurology at the Neurological Clinic, in the Coimbra University Hospital (CHUC), and presently she coordinates the CNC.IBILI research consortium at the University of Coimbra and the “Unidade para a Inovação e Desenvolvimento” (UID) at CHUC.
Catarina Oliveira has served on and chaired several committees at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra, being President of the Scientific Council for 4 years. She is currently coordinating the PhD program on Health Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine and the Inter-Universities PhD program on Aging and Chronic Diseases.
From 2003 to 2005 she was President of the “Instituto de Investigação Interdisciplinar – Universidade de Coimbra”, and from 2003 to 2013 President of the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC). She was member of the first “Conselho Geral” at the University of Coimbra.
Catarina Oliveira has 22 years of experience in the field of Alzheimer’s Disease research, focused on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration. The molecular mechanisms of AD related co-morbidities, namely Type II Diabetes, using cellular and in-vivo animal models of disease, have been a main focus of interest of the research being developed by her group.
Presently, Catarina Oliveira is the leader of the research Group dedicated to Advanced Diagnosis and Biomarkers of Aging and Brain diseases. Her expertise is focused in the research of new biomarkers of neurodegenerative disorders, being a member of the JPND European Consortium dedicated to the study of Biomarkers of Alzheimer’s Disease and Prion Diseases.
Catarina Oliveira contributions to science are described in over 300 publications, with an h-index of 48, in international scientific journals including New England Journal of Medicine and Lancet Neurology and JAMA. She has supervised 20 PhD students, 17 Master students and 5 Postdoctoral fellows.
She has a vast experience in organization and leadership of research and in evaluation of research projects. She has been reviewer for FCT, Welcome Trust, Alzheimer's Association, Parkinson’s UK, Medical Research Council (MRC) and European Research Council (ERC).
She was member of the Health Sciences Scientific Council of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), and sub-director of the Portugal/ Harvard Medical School Programme. She is member of the direction of Health Cluster Portugal (HCP), and of the European DANA Alliance for the Brain (EDAB).
In 2006 she awarded the prize “Estimulo à Excelência”, by “Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia” (FCT), and in 2008 the prize “Nunes Correa Verdades de Faria”, in aging, by “Santa Casa da Misericordia de Lisboa”.
In 2015 she was awarded with the “Grande Oficial da Ordem da Instrução Pública” by the President of the Portuguese Republic, and in 2016 she was awarded with the Medal of Distinguished Service, gold category, by the Ministry of Health of Portugal.
