About Amie Steel

Amie Steel is an Associate Professor in the Australian Research Consortium in Complementary and Integrative Medicine (ARCCIM) at UTS. As an expert in women’s health - with a particular focus on pregnancy, fertility and preconception health – and complementary medicine, she is ranked as the #1 Traditional and Complementary Medicine Researcher in Australia (2021-present). Amie received her PhD in Public Health in 2013 from UTS before undertaking post-doctoral research at the University of Queensland. She returned to UTS in 2014 to accept a competitively appointed Industry Fellowship at ARCCIM. With an enduring focus on furthering the knowledgebase in her chosen fields, Amie has authored over 250 publications on complementary medicine and health promotion, including top tier journal articles, book chapters and research books. She has attracted a total of over $4.3 million in research funding and serves as a senior, guest or associate editor, or on the editorial board of many high-profile journals. She has been an invited keynote, plenary and session chair at over 20 national and international conferences hosted by prestigious organisations across academia and industry in the Western Pacific, Asia, the Americas and Europe. With a transdisciplinary approach and strong focus on practical outcomes, combined with solid networks at home and overseas, Amie’s work has led to methodological advancements in health research, and informed health practice and decision-making in maternity care, health social science, nursing, social work and women’s health. Her research has informed health policy reviews and developments in Australia and, internationally, her work has informed WHO policy documents and national policies and reports in Bangladesh, Germany, UK and Australia. Amie has received multiple honours and awards for her work including an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship (2023-2027); the Naturopaths and Herbalists Association of Australia Award for Notable Contributions to Naturopathy and Herbal Medicine (2023); World Naturopathic Federation President's Award (2022); Complementary Medicines Australia Industry Contributor of the Year (2018); Medicines Journal’s Research Travel Award (2018); the National Association of Primary Care Research Group Conference Award (2018); and the Naturopaths and Herbalists Association of Australia Award for Early Career Research in Herbal Medicine (2015). As an enthusiastic teacher and research supervisor, Amie is dedicated to offering her students a wide array of opportunities to maximise their learning and career prospects. As a public intellectual, Amie’s research has been translated into multiple languages to inform the public via widely accessed websites (e.g., Wikipedia) and news outlets (e.g., The Guardian, The Courier Mail, The Conversation and ABC Radio) in 15 countries and all world regions.
