About Prof. Dr. Roland Rau

Roland Rau is Professor of Demography at the University of Rostock and Max Planck Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany, where he leads the research group "Mathematical & Actuarial Demography" After obtaining his PhD in demography, he was a research scholar at Duke University in the US. Since 2009 he is a faculty member at the University of Rostock, first as an assistant professor and since 2011 as a full professor. He was guest researcher at the Center for Demography & Population Health at Florida State University and in the Dept. of Public Health at the University of Southern Denmark. From 2011 until 2015 he was Principal Investigator of an ERC Starting Grant, which dealt with the visualization of mortality dynamics and the development and computer implementation of a novel mortality forecasting model. His research in the area of mortality analysis, aging, and quantitative methods has been published in major medical journals (e.g. The Lancet, BMJ), demographic journals (e.g., Demography, Population & Development Review) and in general-science journals (e.g., PNAS).
