Since the beginning of February 2019, Associate Professor Christine Goffinet has headed her research group at the Institute of Virology of the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. The biologist studied at the University of Hamburg and obtained her PhD at the Heidelberg University. Further stages in her career include University of Ulm and TWINCORE, Hannover. She has a special interest in gaining a better understanding in innate immunity against human pathogenic virus infections and and strives at translating basic science into clinically relevant approaches. She is researching the human immunodeficiency virus HIV and the Chikungunya virus, which is also finding its way into Europe as an emerging virus in the wake of global warming. Furthermore, she is studying new approaches to improve HIV-1 cure strategies. She and her team got awarded numerous prizes, including the AIDS prize 2017 of the German AIDS Society.
