Dr (Mrs) Augustina Angelina Sylverken is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Theoretical and Applied Biology at KNUST. She is also an exceptionally motivated and innovative Senior Research Fellow at the KCCR where she leads the One Health Virology Group. Her research interest is in emerging and re-emerging viruses of zoonotic origin as a proxy to viral zoonosis within the One Health Concept. For her PhD, she majored in Virology at KNUST. Augustina did her Post-doctoral research studies at the Institute of Virology, University of Bonn Medical Centre, Germany and KCCR. During this time, she studied the family of Coronaviruses and other emerging and re-emerging viruses of zoonotic origin as a paradigm for the transmission interface between wildlife, livestock and humans within the One Health Concept. Dr. Sylverken has been involved in large scale multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary studies with teams of investigators with sponsorship from prestigious funders. With such funds, she has been a Lead Investigator, Co-investigator or Project Coordinator in executing research activities. More recently, Dr. (Mrs.) Sylverken has contributed immensely to the KNUST community, Ghana and the global scientific community through her articulate advocacy, education and research publications on COVID-19 and other health issues. This has earned her awards and recognition in high-profiled meetings in Ghana and abroad. She is a strong advocate of building the next generation of females in STEM and co-founded the Women in Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (WiSTEM.Gh), a notable non-governmental organization interested in raising the next generation of women in STEM careers. She has published widely and also reviews and serves as an Editor for a number of scientific journals.
