Klaus Michael Beier

Professor Klaus M. Beier, MD PhD has been head of the Institute of Sexology and Sexual Medicine at the Charité – University Clinic in Berlin since 1996. He is in charge of the undergraduate training of medical students in sexual medicine as well as the postgraduate training for physicians and psychologists in this field. Professor Beier is in charge of the outpatient clinic of the institute which offers assessment and treatment of the full range of sexual disorders and gender dysphorias. He is licensed to practice as a specialized psychotherapist, psychoanalyst and as a physician for psychosomatics. His main research focus is forensic sexology and particularly follow-up studies of previously expert-evaluated sex offenders. His current research focuses on the prevention of child sexual abuse. The research goal is to encourage self-identified undetected pedophiles to seek professional help and avoid committing child sexual abuse or child pornography offences. For this purpose, he initiated the 'Prevention Project Dunkelfeld' in 2005 which has by now extended to 10 additional locations all over Germany. This prevention project has been awarded several national prizes. Furthermore, since 2014 and supported by German government, Prof. Beier has been expanding the prevention approach to juveniles aged between 12 and 18 who display sexually deviant behavior towards children. He is one of the principal investigators of the research consortium 'Neural Mechanisms Underlying Pedophilia and Sexual Offending Against Children: Origins, Assessment and Therapies' funded by the German Ministry of Education and Health. He is a member of the International Academy of Sex Research, president of the German Society for Sexual Medicine, Sex Therapy and Sexual Science, founder of the German scientific journal 'Sexuologie' and reviewer of several international journals. His last English book publication was 'Sexual Medicine in Clinical Practice'.
