Dr Ackland is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at
Monash University in Australia, where she co-ordinates several units in undergraduate biomedical
science and medicine, teaching in the areas of health policy, health systems and public health.
Dr Helen Ackland is also the Senior Clinical Trauma Research Fellow at the National Trauma Research
Institute at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, and is the recipient of the Alfred-Monash University
Intensive Care Research Fellowship. She has been the recipient of several fellowships and grants
from the Victorian Trauma Foundation and the Transport Accident Commission for acute spinal
column injury research, and has been recipient of the prestigious Spinal Research Award from the
Spine Society of Australia. Her primary research interests include cervical spine trauma
epidemiology, morphology, management, imaging practices and outcomes, and ladder fall-related
injuries.
