Dr Gail Carson, OBE is the chair of the Global Outbreak Alert & Response Network (GOARN) Steering Committee. Her involvement with GOARN dates back to Gulu, 2000. During those 23 years she has been involved in outbreak response at country level, regional and Geneva. Currently, she is also, chair of the WHO EURO Preparedness 2.0 Technical Advisory Group. For the past 12 years she has played a central role in setting up an international clinical research network called ISARIC, administratively based at the University of Oxford. Her move to clinical research followed 5 years at the public health agency for England, where as a qualified infectious diseases doctor she became frustrated with the lack of evidence for the care of patients with emerging diseases. During the same time she supported the scientific secretariat of the research funders consortium, GloPID-R. More recently, she led on the development of the GOARN strategy 2022-2026 where the focus is very much on GOARN going local and the emergency workforce development/scale up at national level. She was delighted to be recognised in the King’s Honours list for her contributions to global health spanning two decades, and to be made an Associate Fellow of the University of Oxford Business School.
