Christian Luft has been State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) since October 2018. Previously, he was Head of Department for Social, Health, Labour Market, Infrastructure and Social Policy at the Federal Chancellery, where he was also responsible for Education and Research.
Christian Luft has many years of experience in federal and state administration: From January 2010 to December 2013, he first headed the 'Social, Health and Labour Market Policy' group at the Federal Chancellery and then the 'Social Insurance, Old-age Provision and Social Assistance' department at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.
Before moving to Berlin, Christian Luft was Head of the 'Nursing and Care for the Elderly, Nursing Insurance' department at the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs from May 2007 to January 2010 and Deputy Head of the 'Social Insurance' department.
From September 2006 to May 2007, he had already worked in the Federal Chancellery - as head of the 'Health' department. Before that, he was head of department and deputy head of the 'Work and Social Security' department in the Ministry of Social Affairs in Baden-Württemberg, where he began his career in March 1991, first as a press officer, then as a personal officer and later as the office manager of Friedhelm Repnik, then Minister of Social Affairs.
Christian Luft studied administrative sciences at the University of Konstanz from 1983 to 1988 and subsequently completed his preparatory service for the Higher General Administrative Service and later the Management Academy of the State of Baden-Württemberg.
