Laurent Degos

Laurent Degos, MD PhD, graduate of the Harvard School of Public Health, Professor Emerite of Hematology (University of Paris), member of French Academy of Medicine and corresponding member of Academy of Sciences, member of The Scientific Panel for Health DG RDT Eu). Laurent Degos was appointed as Chairman of the Board of the Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS), he chaired the French Agency for Health Product Safety, AFSSAPS and the French Transplantation Agency (EFG). He was head of the clinical blood disease department at Saint Louis Hospital (Paris), and director of the Graduate School 'biology and biotechnology therapies'. He was Vice President of Curie Institute Cancer Center, Vice President of Pasteur Institute, member of the French high council for the future of Health Insurance, member of the High Level Reflecting Group OECD, Co-President of the French- Chinese Foundation for Science and is applications. He was head of the University Haematology Institute, chaired the Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux Paris (AP-HP) Scientific Council. He headed the INSERM unit 'Transplantation immunogenetics' unit and the Institute of Health Policy Studies. He was appointed as General Secretary of the European Haematology Association (EHA. He participated to the development of several 'start up' among them 'GENSET' (scientific chairman). His multidisciplinary published 370 scientific articles in the fields of genetics, immunology, haematology, cancer and public health (Health service research), and books. He first worked on the Major Histocompatibility Complexe (HLA), with Jean Dausset (Nobel Price, 1980) and was elected as Councillor for the International workshops on Histocompatibility (Los Angeles, 1980). Then he worked in the biology of leukemias. In particular, he discovered how to transform a leukemic cell (acute promyelocytic leukemia) into a normal cell, thereby opening up a new approach to cancer treatment (differentiation therapy, personalized medicine, targeted treatments) rewarded by several prizes among them the General Motors Award (Kettering Prize, 1994, shared with Wang Zheng Yi). He moved on Public Health and delivered the Eisenberg lecture (Washington, 2008), plenary lectures (ISQUA,Hong Kong 2011), European Forum for Quality and Safety of Heath Care (2011) and the Global leader lecture on Quality and Safety of Health Care ( ISQUA, Dublin , Nov 2014). He participated to EuNetHTA (DG SANCO EU), Coordinator of European Network of Patient Safety (EuNetPAS), DG SANCO EU). He initiated the implementation of the optimal patient pathway, (full care cycle, 2005). Officer of the Legion of Honour and Officer of the National Order of Merit, Professor Honoris Causa of Shanghai UMS2 Jiao Tong University, Laurent Degos has received several international prizes including the Sven Killman Award (Genoa, 1992) the annual guest lecture of Leukemia Research Funds (London, 1992), the General Motors Prize (Washington, 1994), the Charles Brupbacher prize (Zurich, 1996), the Loubaresse award, Curie Institute (Paris 2000), the Gagna and Von Hoeck Prize (Brussels2003), and the EHA Jean Bernard award (Amsterdam 2012).
