Dr. Swati Shirwadkar is Professor and Head of Department of Sociology, U.G.C. Centre for Advanced Studies, University of Pune, India and Director of Erasmus Mundus Masters program in Euroculture. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate (honoris causa) from the University of Tampere, Finland, in June 2014. She has been an Erasmus Mundus visiting scholar to several European Universities and has worked as a visiting professor and Diversity Fellow in S.F. Austin State University, U.S. in 2001. She was awarded the Shastri Indo-Canadian Fellowship for research in Canada.
Her teaching and research interests are broadly in the areas of social and cultural changes, particularly gender issues, violence against women and children, sexuality and reproductive health, education, globalization, immigrants and Diasporas and has published papers in these areas. She has given talks, presented papers in conferences and seminars on related topics in several universities and organizations in India, Europe and the U.S. She has worked on editorial boards of national and international journals and has worked as an expert on Indian government committees as well as on several bodies of the universities in India. Her publications include ‘Family Violence in India. Human Rights, Issues, Actions and International Comparisons’ (ed.), ‘Canadian Domestic Violence Policies and Indian Immigrant Women’ in the journal ‘Violence Against Women’, ‘Trends of Youth Sexuality in Globalizing India: Challenge for Curriculum’, and is a coauthor of ‘Prevalence of Violence against Dating Partners by Male and Female University Students Worldwide’, with Prof. Murray Straus, apart from her other research papers, books and monographs.
