About the session

In its 2026 report, 'A World on the Edge', the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board (GPMB) warned that pandemic risk continues to outpace preparedness. Yet, at a time of growing geopolitical fragmentation, fiscal constraint, and competing crises, the mechanisms designed to keep pandemic risks visible to decision-makers are themselves at a crossroads.

As the GPMB concludes its mandate, this session will launch the Board's Capstone Insights Report, 'Getting Ahead of Pandemic Risk: Insights from Eight Years of Global Monitoring.' Drawing on the GPMB's unique experience since 2018, the report distills why monitoring matters, what sustained monitoring can reveal about preparedness and pandemic risk, and how future monitoring can evolve to remain relevant and effective in a rapidly changing world.

Most importantly, the session will look ahead. At a moment when the implementation of commitments under the Pandemic Agreement, the amended International Health Regulations, and the outcomes of the 2026 High-Level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response are becoming paramount, the Board will explore the key characteristics and enabling conditions required for future pandemic risk monitoring to sustain political attention, inform policy, and guide action.
