Bridging Policy and Research: Translating the EU Global Health Strategy into Action

The new European Union (EU) Global Health Strategy, adopted by the European Commission in November 2022, sets policy priorities and guiding principles to shape global health, and outlines what the Commission will do and what it invites member states to do. Simultaneously, member states and international partners have also developed global health strategies.

The session will explore how the new EU Strategy will affect and align with national, European and African agendas with a particular focus on global health research, and how it will pave the way for strong interdisciplinary, equitable and effective global health research. How will the EU global health strategy affect the European Union’s research agenda? How will resources be mobilized in terms of implementation, especially for research and development? What is the role of the EU, what do member states need to do? How are member states’ global health strategies aligned with the EU’s agenda now and in the future? How are the new European and member states global health strategies perceived and discussed in Africa? How this interact with the Global Europe Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI) consultation process? How can research strategies and policies promote interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral research approaches as well as more equitable research partnerships? In times of crises: how can researchers and policymakers keep up support for global health research and action?
