Newsletter 07/2023: WHS 2023 Registration Open & Program Details Online

Dear friends,

This month, I want to highlight the critical importance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the urgent need for an accelerated progress to reach them. As President of the World Health Summit, I am deeply concerned about the inadequate development towards these goals, which are fundamental in shaping a healthier and more equitable future for all.

WHS 2023 will address many of the key issues outlined in the SDGs, featuring a wide range of inspiring key note sessions, panel discussions, and workshops led by esteemed experts in the field. Thus, I am pleased to announce that the World Health Summit 2023 online program is now available. Please explore the program and find your favorite sessions and speakers.

Additionally, I am delighted to share that registration for on-site participation at the World Health Summit 2023 in Berlin is now open. This year’s World Health Summit will provide an invaluable platform for everyone aiming to impact global health in any of its many facets. I encourage you to secure your spot and join us for in-person networking, collaboration, and dialogue across all ages and sectors as we unite efforts to catalyze meaningful change in this decisive year for global health.

It Is Time to Set the Alarm for Health Equity

Global health advocacy must face a grim reality. Current data show the insufficient level of progress and investment on UHC to date: 1/3 of the world’s population will remain underserved by 2030. Trends in financial protection are worsening, catastrophic out-of-pocket spending on health has increased, pushing an increasing number of people into extreme poverty. And the full impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is not yet reflected. Let it sink in what this means as countries shift priorities, cut budgets and focus on geopolitical tensions.

The current UN Sustainable Development report comes with a warning: the achievement of the goals is "in deep trouble". Only 15% of 140 targets are on track, no movement on reducing poverty and hunger or protecting the climate has been made. The health goal is particularly off track, showing neither improvement on health determinants (such as poverty and education) nor on building affordable primary health care.

Remember the UN high level meeting on UHC in 2019 that brought political commitment to provide quality essential health services and quality, safe, effective, affordable and essential medicines, vaccines, diagnostics and health technologies to 1 billion people with unmet needs by 2023? Will the meeting this September admit to failure and identify the reasons? Will it assess the added value of such high level meetings if they do not lead to political action? And we must ask why the hopes and efforts of global health advocates to put health on the agenda of heads of state – be it to fight pandemics or to establish UHC – have been so brutally shattered. Let's do so at the World Health Summit this year.
