Newsletter 06/2022: WHS 2022 Registration Open, Program News, Regional Meeting Wrap-Up

Dear friends,

Let me start with a big Thank-you to our friends from M8 Alliance member Sapienza University for successfully hosting this year's Regional Meeting in Rome. This meeting provided ample space for discussions on important issues such as vaccine development, sustainable financing and governance of health systems, and many more. The final statement, the M8 Alliance Declaration, summarizes the central recommendations for action. Above all, the Regional Meeting 2022 conveyed an understanding that we need to use the COVID-19 health crisis for learning and finding of new solutions. The attention that has been shifted towards global health cannot go unused.

That is why the World Health Summit 2022 – the first World Health Summit organized together with WHO - is of tremendous importance to bring about change for health for all. I am pleased that German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, one of the high patrons of the World Health Summit, will be delivering a speech at the opening ceremony. Germany and the G7 nations just declared "Healthy Lives" a top priority and emphasized the need to improve "Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response" as well as "Global Health Architecture" at the G7 Summit in Elmau.

I hope many of you will join us for WHS 2022. Register now  - we look very much forward to seeing you in Berlin, October 16-18.

Stay healthy and safe!

G7 SUMMIT: MANY CRISES AT ONCE

Never before did a G7 summit have to deal with so many crises at once: War, hunger, climate, COVID-19 - with the war against Ukraine being the all-dominating topic. The three-day summit, hosted by this year's German presidency, ended with key results on support for Ukraine, the establishment of a climate club, a global alliance on food security, ensuring secure energy supply, and enhancing global health. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz - also High Patron of WHS 2022 - stressed that the world's seven leading economies stand together in unity and determination. The 28-page closing statement, the G7 Leaders' Communiqué, focuses on six central issues including: A sustainable planet, healthy lives (incl. pandemic prevention, preparedness and response as well as global health architecture), investment in a better future.
