The WHS Academic Alliance Working Group on Health Science and Diplomacy co-hosted a webinar with the Global Health Diplomacy and Security Program (GHDP) at the Global Health Institute (GHI) at the American University of Beirut and its Co-Lead Partner, Paris Cité University, exploring the global governance of major outbreaks of deadly infectious diseases.
Against the backdrop of renewed concern over Ebola outbreaks and other emerging infectious disease threats, the webinar brought together leading global health experts to examine how global systems can coordinate responses to major epidemics. The discussion explored key aspects of governance, preparedness, equity, research and international cooperation in health security.
Drawing on lessons learned from HIV, Ebola, COVID-19 and other emerging infectious diseases, the experts highlighted the critical role of coordinated research networks, evidence-based policymaking, equitable access, community engagement and international collaboration in strengthening pandemic preparedness and response.
The discussion underscored the importance of stronger multilateral cooperation and effective global governance, while emphasizing that preparedness must begin long before the next outbreak occurs.
