At the Opening Night of the World Health Summit 2026 in Berlin, the traditional WHS Regional Meeting baton was passed from Nairobi to Hong Kong. WHS International President 2026 Lukoye Atwoli handed the baton to WHS International President 2027 Chak-sing Lau, marking the transition from this year’s host, Aga Khan University, to the LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed).
The handover is a longstanding WHS tradition connecting successive Regional Meetings. Hosted each year by a member of the WHS Academic Alliance in close partnership with the World Health Summit, the meetings bring regional priorities to the forefront and connect regional leadership with the global health dialogue.

From Nairobi, Kenya…
Hosted by Aga Khan University, the WHS Regional Meeting 2026 took place from April 27–29 at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) under the theme “Reimagining Africa’s Health Systems: Innovation, Integration, and Interdependence.”
More than 3,000 participants from over 80 countries came together with more than 400 speakers across over 80 sessions. Discussions focused on strengthening health systems across Africa and translating commitments into implementation, with a strong emphasis on health sovereignty, greater ownership, mutual accountability, and global partnerships on equal footing.
…to Hong Kong, China
The baton now moves to Hong Kong, China, where the next WHS Regional Meeting will take place from May 7–9, 2027, hosted by the LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed).
Under the theme “Health Across Borders,” the meeting will explore the boundaries the global health community must cross together – between health systems and the digital world, across sectors and disciplines, and between breakthrough science and equitable policy.
