Founded in 2013 by the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) and the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) is a translational research institution within the German science system. The core idea is to combine translational research with an overarching systems medicine approach to bridge the gap between basic research and clinical application. The Institute's mission is to transform advances in life sciences research—for example in cell biology, molecular biology, and biochemistry—into benefits for patients. The BIH receives institutional funding from the German federal government and the state of Berlin.
