Over 700 years old, the University of Coimbra is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site. Renowned for its excellence in education and research regarding medicine, healthcare services, health sciences and technologies, it consists of eight faculties, two institutes as well as its close partner the Coimbra Hospital and University Center. Over 26 000 students attend the university from 92 countries, including over 1400 international students. The core aim of the University is to disseminate culture, science and technology, contributing to the economic and social development of the community.
Currently, the University has over five hundred Erasmus institutional agreements with European universities from more than thirty countries, and is part of networks including the Coimbra Group, European University Association and the Association of Portuguese Language Universities. It collaborates with Harvard University, MIT and University of Texas Austin on education and research programs regarding information and communication technologies, biomedical research, bio-engineering and sustainable energy, as well as advanced computing and mathematics.
The University of Coimbra is a member of the M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centers, Universities and National Academies.
