Founded in 1652, the Leopoldina is one of the oldest academies of science in the world. In 2008, it was appointed as the German National Academy of Sciences. With some 1,500 members, the Leopoldina brings together scientists from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and many other countries. It addresses key issues of particular significance for the future of society from a scientific perspective and independent of economic or political interests, shares its findings with policymakers and the public, and puts these issues up for discussion on a national and international level.
