July 2012

Major program update, July 2012

Twenty years after the original summit, the world will reconvene in Brazil for the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. Health and research are the basis for development, these issues however do not figure prominently in the agenda for Rio. The M8 Alliance recognizes that research for health must play an essential part in the development agenda.

The World Health Summit 2012 – under the theme “Research for Health and Sustainable Development” – will focus on issues and possible solutions for non-communicable diseases and conditions of global concern. The modern unhealthy lifestyle is a main cause of the new epidemics, like obesity, diabetes and mental illness. Sustainable solutions for healthcare systems to meet these challenges as well as a greater awareness of the global economic risks and human suffering related to the epidemiologic transition are urgently required.

The World Health Summit will approach these topics with five different tracks, present in each day's program structure >>>

“Centre Paris-Berlin for Public Health” opens January 22nd, 2013

In March 2012, Prof. Jean-François Girard, President of PRES Sorbonne Paris Cité, and Prof. Detlev Ganten, President of World Health Summit, announced a next step to improve Global Health: the founding of a “Centre Paris-Berlin for Public Health”. The French-German cooperation will focus on mutually addressing shared questions of public health, combining the high standards of knowledge at hand in Paris and Berlin.

On May 23rd and 24th, Prof. Annette Grüters-Kieslich, Dean of the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, and Prof. Jean-François Girard, President of PRES Sorbonne Paris Cité, further developed these plans and decided upon Jan. 22nd 2013 as the date for opening the new “Centre Paris-Berlin for Public Health”. The date was chosen to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty, which marked a new foundation for positive relations between France and Germany.

Prof. Detlev Ganten, President of World Health Summit, unequivocally welcomes the still intensifying cooperation between the two countries to improve the healthcare situation. “Public Health has tremendous problems to solve; yet France and Germany have outstanding medical and academic skills at their disposal. Bringing together experts from both countries to face mutual challenges is an important step in the right direction.”

Thus, the “Centre Paris-Berlin for Public Health” will intensify international cooperation in the spirit of the World Health Summit, which is held annually under the high patronage of Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany and François Hollande, President of the French Republic. It brings together stakeholders from academia, politics, the private sector, and civil society.

The 2012 Summit will be held from Oct. 21st – 24th. Registration opens Friday, June 14th.

June 2012

Disappointing Lack of Health and Research

(June 19th, 2012) 20 years after the “United Nations Conference on Environment and Development”, the United Nations will organize the “Conference on Sustainable Development” (Rio+20) from June 20th – 22nd. The slogan for 2012 will be “The Future We Want”. Although agreeing upon the necessity to gather and discuss, the health and research sector thoroughly denounce the lack of health as an important aspect on the agenda.

THE LANCET asks: “But is the future we want really one without health? […] Since a healthy environment is a prerequisite for healthy people and vice versa, the Rio+20 conference must not only re-examine, but also put at its centre, the link between health, the environment, and sustainable development.”

The World Health Organisation (WHO) emphasizes exactly this link of health and development, concentrated into a few striking bullet-points:

• Universal health coverage can support sustainable development: a healthier population contributes more effectively to economies and societies.
• Health in the green economy: some green economy measures, such transport networks for walking and cycling, can yield very large health "co-benefits", e.g. for physical activity. Other measures may pose risks for health that need to be managed. For instance, employees may face new risks, such as exposure to toxins used in emerging technologies.
• Health-based measures of sustainable development: Tracking and monitoring of health-based indicators/measures – such as the proportion of people exposed to high rates of urban air pollution, or workers' exposures to air pollutants/toxins – can help us evaluate progress towards sustainable development that brings optimal human welfare.

Furthermore, “The WHO report finds that many forms of asthma and allergies, as well as heart disease and strokes related to increasingly intense heat waves and cold spells, could be addressed by climate-friendlier housing measures,” as to be red on the official Rio+20 page.

High ranking politicians are joining the chorus of addressing the lack of integrating health into the Rio+20 agenda. For example in an open letter via THE GUARDIAN:

“As members of the Global Leaders Council for Reproductive Health, we call on the negotiators at the Rio+20 conference to ensure that reproductive health and voluntary family planning have a central role in any comprehensive strategy for sustainable development. Rio+20 – known as the Earth Summit – promises to chart a course for global sustainable development that will lift people out of poverty, while preserving our environment for future generations. […]”

Fernando Henrique Cardoso, former President of Brazil
Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland; president, Mary Robinson Foundation
Climate Justice
Joy Phumaphi, former Minister of Health, Botswana; former Vice-president of Human Development, World Bank
Gro Harlem Brundtland, former Prime Minister of Norway; former Director General, World Health Organization
Dr. Fred Sai, former President, International Planned Parenthood Federation; former Director of Population, World Bank
Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka, former Deputy President of South Africa
Jenny Shipley, former Prime Minister of New Zealand; Vice President, Club of Madrid

The World Health Summit hears and shares the questions of these friends, supporters and colleagues. Accordingly, we aim to bring together stakeholders, decision-makers, researchers, and many more to discuss the topics so bitterly ignored in the Rio+20 agenda.

You can support us and support global health by joining the discussion: Be at the World Health Summit, October 21st – 24th 2012, in Berlin, Germany.

65th World Health Assembly Adopts 21 Resolutions and Three Decisions

For the 65th time, members of the 194 WHO Member States gathered in Geneva for the World Health Assembly. After six days of discussions, the nearly 3.,000 delegates adopted 21 resolutions and three decisions concerning some of the principal challenges and opportunities for public health.

The resolutions and decisions include:

-    Early marriages and young pregnancies
-    Humanitarian emergencies
-    International Health Regulations
-    Mass gatherings
-    Millennium Development Goals

Furthermore, the World Health Assembly focused on noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). The delegates approved the “development of a global monitoring framework for the prevention and control of NCDs” and put emphasis on the “building of partnerships at national and global levels”, as well as the “need for a comprehensive, coordinated response to addressing mental disorders from health and social sectors at the country level”. (Details on resolutions and decisions can be found online at who.int)

As the World Health Organisation will continue to address these topics, so will the World Health Summit. From October 21st – 24th 2012, representatives of all health-related fields will discuss under the motto “Research for Health and Sustainable Development” various aspects of noncommunicable diseases – one of the big future challenges as Dr Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General, points out:

“As challenges, let me mention noncommunicable diseases and ageing, maternal and child health, under- and over- nutrition, the eradication of polio and health demands during humanitarian emergencies,” said Dr Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General. “As opportunities, let me mention immunization, and the decade of vaccines, and the new multisectoral strategies made possible when we take a social determinants approach.”
