Challenging the Worldwide Cardiovascular Crisis

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has no geographic, gender or socio-economic boundaries. It accounts for nearly a third of all global deaths, 80% of which occur in low- and middle-income countries. With an ageing population and the impact of changing lifestyles, current trends point towards a global CVD epidemic unless urgent action is taken.
Given the considerable economic and healthcare burden of CVD, it is imperative to identify strategies to manage this impending crisis. This session brings together specialists from around the globe to discuss these critical topics.

Health eQualities in Europe? - The Patient’s Emerging Consciousness
Logo MSD
Text MSD
Patient centricity is in the zeitgeist. It takes numerous forms such as Health 2.0, patient empowerment, social networks, and a rising advocacy for change that calls for a legitimate share in decision making and health policy for patients. Without a doubt, the future of our health care systems will be shaped by this new force. Read more
Patient groups have played a key role in establishing the "voice of the patient". For example, the Active Citizenship Network has been instrumental in the drafting in 2002 of the European Charter of Patients' Rights along with a number of citizens' organizations. The European Charter of Patients' Rights provides 14 fundamental patients' rights that aim to guaranteeing a "high level of human health protection" (Article 35 of the Charter of fundamental rights of the European Union) and ensuring that high quality of services are provided by national health systems in Europe.
European Parliament representatives have been very supportive of initiatives to further patients' rights in Europe. Christopher Fjellner, a Member of the European Parliament from Sweden, has been a strong advocate for patient's rights, both regarding access to information and ability to get the best treatment in any Member State (Cross-Border Healthcare). "Of the decisions that we take in the European Parliament, today’s is one of those that I am most proud of. It is a decision about opening up Europe and guaranteeing freedom of movement for those who are sick and in need of healthcare, for those for whom freedom of movement may be a matter of life or death, a decision that gives everyone the opportunity to decide on their own healthcare, and it is not only those who are well-informed or wealthy who will have this chance, but we will make it possible for everyone to seek healthcare wherever they want to." (EP Debates, 23 April 2009).
Another approach to patients' empowerment is to further health literacy in our societies. Health literacy programs can play a fundamental role in helping patients and their families take full charge of their well being, especially when faced with chronic diseases. As stated at a recent event by Antonyia Parvanova, a Member of the European Parliament from Bulgaria, "For decades we have put too much emphasis on what health systems and health professionals can do for patients. We will have to look at how informed patients can help themselves in areas like smoking cessation and chronic disease management." (European Parliament debate June 23, 2010). Leading patient groups, such as the European Patient Forum have identified health literacy as crucial for patients' effective empowerment and the sustainability of our health care systems.
Fueling the calls for European patients' rights is the inequalities that still prevail between Member States in terms of access to health care and to innovative medicines, in particular. This issue has been well identified by leading patient groups and is supported by recent studies showing the discrepancies in access to therapies in Europe. In the field of cancer, Professors Nils Wilding and Bengt Jönsson have shown that great variations exist between countries in the use of cancer medicines.
The private sector is also playing its role in supporting wellness programmes that seek to engage patients and their families in taking charge of their health. Among various examples, MerckEngage.com provides easy-to-use tools to maintain a healthy lifestyle (including through better nutrition and physical activity), as well as practical support for caregivers.
